THE LONG WAY TO NEW YORK

⇒Lounge Review: Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 Plaza Premium Lounge

INTRO

After going through the self check-in process at Terminal 1, I went to visit the Plaza Premium Lounge. This is actually not my first time visiting this lounge, I’ve visited it plenty of times, even when I am flying budget carriers since Jetstar and now Scoot departs from Terminal 1. That’s the good thing about third-party lounges, they are accessible regardless of airline you are flying, even if you are slouching out in economy.

My Qantas flight to Sydney was departing at half past 8pm, so I had some time to spend in the lounge. I have access courtesy of my OCBC Voyage Card, but one can also access this lounge with a Priority Pass membership, easily attainable with even the market-entry cards such as DBS Altitude or Citi Premiermiles. If you do not have a credit card, Grab elite members have the option of accessing this lounge with up to a 50% discount off walk-in rates, with Platinum Grab members being able to access this lounge at just 30 SGD, a solid deal for a 3-hour stay.

The Plaza Premium Lounge in Singapore is located on the far end of the Terminal 1, where the C gates are. You will have to take an escalator up to Level 3, where you find the Plaza Premium Lounge, along with the Emirates Business Class lounge along with the new Qatar Airways Lounge.

neighbouring lounges, the Qatar Airways Premium lounge has since been open as of Jan 2020

Upon registering, the reception will ask if you would like a shower. There are 3 shower suites and a complimentary bath towel along with amenities are provided. I declined this time around.

After formal procedures, you venture into a space that is well carpeted, which helps with noise refraction and enhances the overall cosiness of the lounge. You will first see group seating areas shaped in a honeycomb design, with its individual counterparts located behind, more suitable for work purposes. There are also individual rooms should guests have a long layover over the night, which will incur additional charges. On the other end, leading to the apron view, there are individual armchairs laid out.

At the opposite end of the apron view, you have your dining options, which offers on demand dining, hot food options, and a small salad bar. There is also a separate bar section which offers complimentary alcohol, along with some snacks and prawn crackers. Other alcoholic beverages are chargeable.

I decided to settle at an open dining table with high seats and ordered my favourite offering, free flow sushi! There’s the option of tuna/salmon sashimi, crabmeat and tamago, so there’s something for every tastebud. The portions are generous and are all prepared on the spot, which do take up some time, so you can grab something else while waiting for your order.

I later moved towards the seating area with a view of the apron. I managed to secure arguably one of the best seats, which also had a leg rest compared to the to the other individual seats. While I was on a night departure this time around, here’s what it looked like in the morning from one of my previous visits, where I had a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 refuelling for company.

I dallied for a further 10 minutes before grabbing a bowl of Japanese soba noodles which caught my eye earlier on, and pairing it with a glass of Carlsberg, before leaving for my flight.

concluding thoughts

The Plaza Premium Lounge at Terminal 1 is always my first port of call even before I begin my adventures. The food options and availability of shower suites always makes it a pleasant stay. The food menu is regularly rotated, and during the other times I was there, Japanese ramen, calzone pizza, fishball noodles, were available. Personally, I will recommend the laksa, which broth and ingredients provided are excellent!

Definitely one of the better third party lounges in Singapore Changi, do visit this lounge on your next journey departing from Terminal 1!
